The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program provides opportunities for teachers to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from other countries for a semester or a year. By living and working abroad, exchange teachers gain an understanding and appreciation of different educational systems and cultures, and enrich their schools and communities by providing students with new perspectives about the world in which they live.

NASA REASoN Science Education Project Web Materials Available (Free),
Fall 2011, Indiana State University/SEROS

Indiana State University (ISU) recently completed two modules as part of a five-year NASA REASoN Education Project entitled Measuring Vegetation Health (MVH).  The primary ISU focus was to develop four interactive web-based courses to support existing grades 7-12 science courses or possibly being a core of new courses.  “Light Interactions with Earth Features”and “Earth and Environmental Changes from Volcanic Activity” are titles of the two modules.  Both modules have 4-6 hours of introductory classroom material and 12+ hours of advanced classroom material. The ISU development group is comprised of university scientists/educators and grades 7-12 science teachers.

The two “Light Interactions with Earth Features“ courses have a Spectral theme designed for use by grades 7-12 science students in general science, environmental studies, ecology/ biology, geography, geology, Earth science and physics.  Students are taught how light interacts with Earth features by interpreting data derived from airborne and satellite sensors. Spectral data are interpreted both visually and/or through hands-on computer analysis. Student analyses of light reflectance patterns are presented with a view of showing how Earth features can be classified into useful information of value to society.

“Earth and Environmental Changes from Volcanic Activity” courses have a Temporal theme applicable to grades 7-12 general science, environmental studies, ecology/biology, geography, geology, Earth science, and Earth systems science.  Visual interpretation of Landsat satellite data, aerial and ground based photographs, GIS files and Orthophotographs are among the data types explored.   Changes in terrain and environmental consequences following the May 18th, 1980 eruptions of Mt. St. Helens (MSH) in Washington State are explored.  Landsat digital imagery is used to assess biological and physical changes associated with volcanic effects on the MSH landscape. Among the topics highlighted are principles of volcanism/volcanic processes, visual interpretation of Landsat satellite imagery over time, and understanding elements of biotic succession.

Teachers interested in exploring one or more of these courses should use the URL “seros.us/moodle” which opens the first page of the website where access to a pdf of information about the nature of the modules is found (click on Spectral and Temporal Courses: Format, Structure, and Content).  Then, to get a preview of materials found in the modules, click on the link “Selected Course Material” found under the heading “Samples from Earth/ Environmental Courses”. However, to access all module/course materials a user should contact Dennis Skelton (dskelton1@indstate.edu) by e-mail with a cc to Paul Mausel (paul.mausel@indstate.edu) to get an ID and Password required for course login any time after October 1, 2011.
